Federal Government to review Insurance Bill

The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun yesterday, said plans to review the Insurance Consolidated Bill to ensure an efficient insurance industry in the country have been concluded.

This is contained in a statement yesterday in Abuja by the Director of Press, Ministry of Finance, Mr Marshal Gundu.

Adeosun said that the move aimed to make the Bill conform to the ideals of contemporary insurance practice.

The Nigerian Army has commended Sagir Koli, a Captain, who exposed a video recording exposing plans by his commanding officer and top officials of the Goodluck Jonathan administration to rig the June 21, 2014 election in Ekiti State.

The army praised Mr. Koli’s “non-partisanship and professional conduct during the election period.”

The fight against corruption in Nigeria may get tougher, as the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, says there is ‘no giving up’.

Mr MAGU spoke on Monday in Lagos in a meeting with the Chairman and the Chief Executive Officer of Channels Television, Mr John Momoh.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC explained, yesterday, why it has not arrested former President Goodluck Jonathan following startling revelations on how the former National Security Adviser, NSA, Col Sambo Dasuki (retd) allegedly disbursed over $2.1 billion meant for arms purchase to various individuals.

Explaining why the former president has not been arrested while speaking with online news publishers yesterday, in Lagos, the EFCC boss, Mr Ibrahim Magu said that no document has been traced to Jonathan giving any approval for the disbursement of the money for any purpose other than arms purchase.

The South-East All Progressives Congress, APC, yesterday, described ex-governor of old Anambra State, Jim Nwobodo’s entry into the party as a grand plan to shield himself from the long arm of the law, following his alleged involvement in the $2.1 billion arms deals undergoing probe by the Economic Financial Crime Commission, EFCC.

The ex-governor was reportedly mentioned as one of the beneficiaries of the arms deal to the tune of N600 million meant for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, campaigns and mobilization in the South-East geopolitical zone in the days leading to last general election.

APC’s Timipre Sylva to challenge result of Bayelsa Governorship election in court

The candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the just concluded governorship election in Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva, on Monday said he would challenge the result of the election in court.

The Independent National Electoral Commission had on Sunday declared the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, and incumbent governor of the state, Seriake Dickson, winner of the election.

APC chieftain opposes Nwobodo’s defection from PDP

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu state, Osita Okechukwu, on Monday expressed dismay at last weekend’s defection of the former governor of old Anambra State, Senator Jim Nwobodo, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.

Okechukwu in a statement made available to newsmen in Enugu insisted that before joining the now ruling party, Nwobodo should first clear himself of the allegation that he benefited from the Dasuki arms deal money, noting dumping his party midway amounted to “running away from justice”.

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has called on its members, who collected money from the former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), to return it immediately.

The party said it didn’t ask any of its members to collect money on its behalf during the last general elections.

Olisa Metuh sues EFCC and Attorney-General over continued detention

Lagos Lawyer and human rights activist, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, has asked the Federal High Court, sitting in Lagos, to order the immediate release of Chief Olisa Metuh, the spokesman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, from custody.

Olisa Metuh was arrested by the operatives of the EFCC on January 5, in his house in Abuja and has been in custody since then, without access to his family and lawyers or doctors.
