High Court orders unconditional release of Radio Biafra director, Nnamdi Kanu

Barely 24 hours after charge against him was struck out, the Federal High Court in Abuja, today, ordered the Department of State Service, DSS, to forthwith, release ‎the detained ‎leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu.‎

Ruling on the fundamental right enforcement suit Kanu lodged before the high court, Justice Ademola Adeniyi, said there was no basis for the applicant to remain in custody since there is currently no charge pending against him.

A Magistrate Court in Abuja has discharged the Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, following the withdrawal of the charges proffered against him by the Department of State Services on Wednesday.

Counsel to the accused, Vincent Obeffa, told Channels Television that with the court’s ruling, the accused has no criminal cases against him in Nigeria or anywhere in the world and as such, he is a free man.

A counsel to the Department of State Services, DSS, Mosses Idakwo, on Monday told a Federal High Court in Abuja that the director of a pirate radio station, Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, was sponsoring terrorism against Nigeria.

Mr. Idakwo asked the court to disregard a bail application by Mr. Kanu’s counsel, Vincent Obeta, as the matter involving his client was terrorism-related.

A Federal High Court in Abuja will on Thursday rule on a bail application for the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in detention since October.

Mr. Kanu, the director of the underground Radio Biafra, was arrested by the State Security Service.

Calls for his release led to demonstrations in several south east states.

The ceasefire declared by the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, and the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, to give room for a dialogue with the Federal Government appears headed for the rocks.

The groups are peeved by reports that former governor of Akwa-Ibom State, Senator Goodswill Akpabio led a delegation accompanied by some northern elites on behalf of MASSOB to Federal Government to broker a truce.
